I wouldnt go with the RUM, its more than what you would need out to 1000 yards, the recoil is gonna be much worse and loading 180gr bergers wont fit very well in the mag, Im buying a 700 Rem Sendero SF-II in 7mm Mag, nothing beats the BCs and recoil of less than 3500ft/lbs.

IF you would put a break on the 7mm RUM it'd recoil alot less but you'd almost definately need ear protection.

I don't think you can go wrong with a 700 Sendero in 7mm or 7mm ultra mag . They have a decent trigger that can be set at 2.5 pounds and most are extreamly accurate with berger bullets and Best of the west loads. The ultra mag probably would be best with a muzzel brake. The used sendero 7mm ultra mag that I got had only trigger work, no bedding other than factory and shot a 5" group at 1000 yds out of the box.

I called HSM about loading up some 7mm Remington Ultra-Mag bullets with the Berger 180 Grains for my Sendero SF. They don't sell them as part of their line of ammo with Berger bullets. They indicated they would be custom rounds and they would be looking at 3-6 months out for loading them up.

When I bought my Huskemaw scope, I also bought 5 boxes of 7mm RUM from the BOTW guys - Long Range Store up in Burlington, WY. They were a little steep - $80 a box ($4 a bullet), so, I have started to get into reloading (still waiting on CCI 250 Primers from Cabelas).

My Ultra-Mag doesn't have a muzzle break, but it has a mercury tube in the stock. It has less felt recoil than .30-06. It's great to shoot, but, if you don't want to get into reloading, and want to use HSM Ammo with Berger VLDs, get an LR-800, LR-1000, Sendero, etc. in 7mm Mag (well, get what caliber and manufacturer you want 6.5x284, .264, 300 win mag, etc., - there are plenty of rifles that will perform well at long distance, as long as you have the right bullets/ballistics and optics).

You may want to take a look at the Savage 6.5-284. Had a chance to shoot one back in the summer and it's tack driving machine that will take you out to 1000yd. Alot cheaper and more accurate than the christensen arms. Don't know much about manufactured rounds in the 6.5-284. If you're going to shoot long range its going to be hard to avoid reloading your own ammo. Good luck!!

The 6.5x284 uses smaller bullets around 140gr and will have a a bit less recoil than the 7mm Rem Mag, but other than that is almost ballisticly identical to the 7mm Rem mag. Personally Im totally sold on the 7mm Rem mag, especially if youre not handloading, you can buy a box of fusions in a pinch in some podunk town for 30 bucks.

If youve got time to purchase ammo, HSM makes 7mm rem mag with bergers so youre all set.

Just my 2c.

Edit: I also just purchased a sendero in 7mm should be here tomorrow  US optics base and a leupold mark 4 to set her right. Theyre real shooters with little to no work needed.

I think they would be great if they group well at a 100 yards for you (under an inch) other than that, since its factory loaded ammo, other than consistency from round to round its hard to say.

I havent used them, but I did read in an article that HSM made ammo in 7mm rem mag for the secret service a few years ago, they still might. Not sure how accurate that article was but ... best you can do is give em a try, its gonna vary gun to gun.

Are you strictly just target shooting or will you be hunting with it too? If not hunting I would go with the Savage 6.5/284. But if hunting is included as well, the Sendero is hard to beat. Difference being in weight, mass, and barrel length, unless you don't mind packing a heavy 30" pipe in a piece of plastic. Both rounds will get the job done, but for just paper punching, I'd go with the 6.5-284. :|

Yeah, exactly what he said, if you ever wanna do both the sendero is awesome. If youre only punching holes, the savage in 6.5x284 is excellent but too heavy to really use hunting.
